World of Warcraft (WoW) is an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) designed by Blizzard Entertainment, and based off the Warcraft series of RTS (Real-Time Strategy) games. The Warcraft RTS series is comprised of three central games and two expansions, and it was through these initial Warcraft titles that much of the environment, characters, and lore for World of Warcraft was created. Blizzard Entertainment first advanced into MMORPGs with their Diablo series, but neither Diablo nor Diablo II experienced the level of success of WoW, which has around 12 million subscribers worldwide. World of Warcraft is the most successful MMORPG of all time, outshining all competitors past and present.

Two separate expansions packages have been developed for World of Warcraft since the game’s original debut in November of 2004—a date that coincided with the tenth anniversary of Blizzard’s Warcraft franchise. The first WoW expansion, The Burning Crusade, was released in January of 2007, and the second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, hit store shelves in November of 2008.

The central idea behind the development of the World of Warcraft was to create an environment for social interaction between users who would share common goals of completing heroic quests, defeating fearsome foes, and acquiring valuable treasures. WoW provides a cornucopia of opportunities for social interaction, entertainment, and fun. Several individuals spend countless hours building up their characters to maximum potential, while others face off against each other in Player vs. Player combat, or work towards acquiring unique titles, treasures, and bragging rights through amassing Achievement Points. WoW is so popular that some people even make a living off the game through developing manuals like the WoW leveling guide and WoW gold guide, which are in turn sold for cash.

Blizzard offers a free 10-day trial for those who wish to see what World or Warcraft is all about, but for those who wish to continue their adventure, a monthly subscription fee is required. But be forewarned, most who start the 10-day trial find themselves subscribing to World of Warcraft at the end; it’s just that addictive.
